Crafting A Blue Jeans Purse

by

When I was looking at all the awesome recycled purses from my post earlier the cutest denim tote bag stuck out at me. I’m generally not a demin purse person myself. I just do not gt into the whole “jean” look, other than wearing jeans themselves. There are no denim shirts, skirts, or bags in my collection.

But I know some people that love denim. And, honestly I have this pair of jeans that I hate to part with but have ripped out just below the pockets. Despite my teasing that I’m going to cut them off into shorts and wear them in public, they have been sitting at the bottom of the “to-do” pile for a while. So I desided that I’m going to convert them into a new purse! I need to run to the thrift store and see if I can find some zippers to use, and deside which fabric I am going to use to line the purse with. But here is what I have done so far.

I cut the legs off right on the rips. These were my best comfy jeans, I have had them for who knows how long. At least 4 years, though they were bought used so I cann’t be sure exactly how old they are. But they were so comfortable! Apparently too comfortable as one fateful day I bent over to pick something up and…

Once I had the elgs cut off and I evened up the “body” of the purse I took my scissorsafter the legs. One leg had strips cut from it to become the straps. I laid out the leg, measured how long I wanted the straps to be and added a couple inches just in case. Then using my sharpest scissors I cut through both sides at the same time. This way I knew that both strips were the same width and length. I cut them about 2.5 inches wide so that I can fold them up a bit and sew them into the straps.

With the remaining jean leg I cut out a long and wide patch from one side. This will become the bottom of the purse so that it will sit up on it’s own.

Wednesday is half price day so I am hoping to find a great zipper that I can use. Then I need to choose between the dark blue with light blue hearts fabric or the aqua with dark green hearts. Those ar the two pieces from my scrap pile that are large enough and are calling out to me for this purse. I may even pull out the embroidery thread and my tiny seed beads and add some decoration to the front.

About Creative Mom Cafe

Creative Mom Cafe is the place to come and try your hand at something you thought you could never do or to get an idea you would never have had on your own. Most of the ideas I bring to 'the Cafe' are simple and for the creativity-challenged but every now and then I will throw in a doozie for those of you who are waiting for it. Every month will have a theme and all ideas that month will tie in to that theme. It may be fun recipes for kids, a scrapbooking idea, an organizational tip or anything else that is in my head that month. I invite you to send your photos of projects you have done and at the end of the month I will highlight one or two "fan" projects! Thanks, stop in the Cafe as often as you can!
