Ummmm, what a weird topic to have a day devoted to it. Just when you thought it was safe to go out in public...

Good luck. The book that really helped me was Stitch and Bitch. Somehow the illustrations just clicked in a way that previous ones had not.

Also, there are several patterns out there for the shiny, cunning hat. I used dryope's pattern http://dryope.typepad.com/grove/2006/02/jayne_cobb_hat_.html because I preferred the way the decreases are done at the top of the hat (spiral decrease). If you haven't joined Ravelry yet, I highly recommend you do so. The community there is full of helpful folks of all experience levels and the access to patterns, tips etc. is terrific. If you do join, check out the Big Damn Knittters group; just do a search for them. (My Ravelry ID is "enchantknit" and there is a picture there of the hats I made.) Enjoy making the sweetest hat ever.

heh. If I had been knitting longer than a week then I'd say sure thing. hehe

I've updated the post to include the link to the pattern I found on the Craftster forum - http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=19076.20.

I hope I can get the hang of knitting and make at least one of these hats.

My husband says he wants a Jayne Cobb hat. Will you share with me where you found the pattern? Or you can just send one you make if you like. :D

I should also note that I have no idea how to knit either, but bought myself a similar kit last fall. Perhaps I should pull it out and play with it some more.
