Getting Soapy
One of the links I shared in the Saturday speedlinking post was on making soap. It is something that I’ve dabbled in myself, but have never really tried to make a full batch of. I admit I’ve felt a bit intimidated about the process. Not at all like my friend Sara, the soap making wizz! She makes and sells bars of soaps in so many beautiful and delicious scents that it makes me want to take several baths a day.
I thought that if there are any creative moms out there thinking about making soap themselves it might be useful to hear from a pro. So I shot a few questions over to Sara and she was sweet enough to answer then and let me share her tips with you. Read on and soak up her knowledge, then visit her shop and see what I mean about her amazing soaps. You won’t be sorry!
1) What made you decide to start making soap?
It looked like something that would be very fun to do. A few of my friends were making soap from scratch and it got me interested. I read up on the process and got really excited. After my first batch, I was hooked.
2) What was your very first batch of soap like?
I made a LARGE batch of scentless soap from the reciepe book “Clean Naturally” and then rebatched smaller amounts in different scents and styles to see what I liked best.
3) What is your favorite soap to make?
My favorite is probably the “winter skin soap” because its got some additives to make the skin softer and the fragrance is something I created myself. “Summer breeze” is really fun as well because of its color swirl.
4) What books/tools would you recommend for anyone interested in making soap?
The only “book” I’ve read is “Clean Naturally” and its a great resource! Most of my study has been online, and in forums. Though Clean Naturally is an awesome book that I’d recommend. Its an easy to read book, great for the novice and has alot of really wonderful and diverse soaps for all uses.
