Making Fleece Hats
There’s something warm and snuggly about a soft, fleece hat. They are perfect when you’re going out in the cold weather, especially if you are going to be out there a while playing. I mentioned the other day that with the latest cold front that has hit here I rumaged around and found enough fleece to make my nieces each a fleece hat to wear. They aren’t as creative as a dinosaur fleece hat, but they’ll keep warm still.
They certainly were not hard to make. If you have a little fleece and can sew a quick straight stitch you can make on easily. Each hat is made of a single pannel of fleece, measured around my oldest son’s head for width and 14 inches tall. The bottom stripe is a seperate piece of fleece the same width as the large piece and 2.5 inches tall. I sewed this small stripe to the bottom before sewing up the entire hat. Now I laid out the large piece and folded it in half and then in half again. I measured down 1.5 inches from the top and drew a line across. Using that as a base line I cut the corners off to make the top a triangle. It should look like this, only better than my poor drawning. Once you open it up there should be 4 points on the top.

Putting the right sides together I sewed a 1/2 inch seam along the long side of the fleece, between the striped cuff and the four points. For the top I simply sewed the sides of the 4 points together along each side then across the vry top. It gives it a nice pointed top that I think looks nice worn. Finally I turned the hat right sides out and sewed the seem of the cuff on the outside. This hides the seam when the cuff is rolled up.
To make the pom-pom on top I cut 7 strips of pink scrap flece I found. The strips were 1.5 inches wide by 12 inches long. Using a pice of cardboard about 2×4 inches I wrapped 6 of the strips round and round the center. Once done I slowly slid out the cardboard and used the 7th strip to wrap around the centr of the other strips and tied a tight knot. Then I simply used scissors to cut open the loops and to cut off the ends of the 7th strip even with the loops. A little fluffing and it was a nice pom-pom. I just hand stitched it to the top of the hat and I was done.
I hope you have fun making a couple hats of your own. It’s something that you can work with and change to fit your own style. And who knows, you might like it enough to start making and selling fleece hats yourself.
