One Funky Shirt On The Fly

by Summer M.

Every Wednesday is “Half Price Day” at my local thrift shop. And every time I go in I find something I want. The last time I walked out with 2 large rolls of material. It’s polyester, horribly retro, and I love it! Last night I finally rolled it out and found more than enough to make a funky shirt from. There is probably enough to make two or three but I’m giving the rest to another crafty friend of mine to see what she can do with it. I can’t wait to compare what we got from the same material.

Because of how retro the material was I wanted to go back in time with it. It’s not exactly what some would think of when they hear the word retro. Think more along the lines of 1981. That’s right, I went to the 80’s. Big hair, fun fashion, Madonna was still in her prime. I just can’t help myself!

I love how the two fabrics do not go together at all. The main print is a smooth cream color with light blue and chocolate brown stripes. The sleeves, neck, and bottom is a pink ribbed material. If I were to give the whole shirt a name I would call it Chocolate Monday. The colors just remind me of chocolates, which is probably why I fell in love with it.

I did not have a pattern to work with, which ended up messing me up some. I had the image in my mind of what I wanted the shirt to look like and I took it from there. I traced a sleeveless shirt onto newspaper to crate the body pattern, though I miss calculated and it ended up about an inch too small. It fits, but it can be a tight squeeze pulling it on and off. Especially since the striped fabric has no stretch to it at all. The sleeves were created spur of the moment. I had no idea what I was doing, or even if it would work. But I am quite pleased at how they turned out.

About Creative Mom Cafe

Creative Mom Cafe is the place to come and try your hand at something you thought you could never do or to get an idea you would never have had on your own. Most of the ideas I bring to 'the Cafe' are simple and for the creativity-challenged but every now and then I will throw in a doozie for those of you who are waiting for it. Every month will have a theme and all ideas that month will tie in to that theme. It may be fun recipes for kids, a scrapbooking idea, an organizational tip or anything else that is in my head that month. I invite you to send your photos of projects you have done and at the end of the month I will highlight one or two "fan" projects! Thanks, stop in the Cafe as often as you can!
